The first half is ascent: Judah then all Israel, a captured city made capital, the ark brought up, and a covenant promising David a lasting house. The second half is the long consequence of one night — Bathsheba, Uriah, Nathan's parable, and a family that turns on itself in rape, murder, and revolt.
