The quests and their portraits

For more than two centuries scholars have tried to describe Jesus using only the methods of history. The results have ranged from a moral teacher to an apocalyptic prophet, a wandering sage, a social reformer and a Jewish prophet of the kingdom. The question is why the portraits differ so widely.
