The Temple in Jesus' Day

Strictly this is still the Second Temple — Herod never demolished it, he enlarged and refaced it around the continuing sacrifices. What he built was the largest sacred enclosure in the ancient world: a platform of about thirty-six acres, ringed with colonnades, with the old sanctuary standing on a raised terrace inside it.
