The Second Temple

The same footprint, on the same foundations, on the same hill — and emptier than anything before it. Zerubbabel's temple was funded by a Persian king, built by returned exiles under armed opposition, and finished twenty-one years after it was begun. Its inner room, so far as anyone can tell, held nothing at all.
